Satin Spar or Selenite? Two Beautiful Forms of Gypsum
When I first began adding selenite and satin spar to my personal crystal collection years ago, I knew those familiar glowing white towers and wands by the name selenite. That is still the name many people recognize when they see them.
Later, I learned that most of those silky, fibrous pieces are actually satin spar. True selenite is a different form of the same mineral, and it usually looks quite different.
That distinction fascinated me, and it is something I now enjoy sharing with customers. In our shop, we label the fibrous pieces satin spar and reserve the name selenite for true selenite.
So what actually separates them if they are both forms of gypsum?
If you have ever wondered whether the correct name is satin spar or selenite, the answer begins with the way its crystals grew.
Satin spar grows in long, extremely fine fibers packed closely together. Those fibers create its silky white appearance. When you slowly turn a piece in the light, a bright band seems to glide across its surface.
True selenite is usually clearer and more transparent. It often forms in flat, blade-like crystals or thin sheets that can look almost like panes of glass.
They share the same chemical composition, but the way their crystals grew gave them very different appearances. Neither is fake, and one is not somehow better than the other. They are simply two beautiful forms of gypsum.

Water Is Part of the Mineral
Gypsum is a sulfate mineral with the chemical formula CaSO₄·2H₂O—calcium sulfate and water.
Here is the part that surprised me: water is actually built into gypsum’s crystal structure.
That doesn’t mean liquid water is moving around inside the stone. Water molecules became part of the mineral as it formed.
Gypsum commonly begins forming where salty water evaporates. Imagine an ancient sea or salt lake slowly drying up. As the water disappears, dissolved minerals are left behind and eventually form layers of gypsum.
Sometimes groundwater passes through gypsum-rich rock and dissolves a small amount of the mineral, much like salt dissolves in water. When that mineral-rich water enters cracks in the surrounding rock, gypsum can crystallize there. In satin spar, those crystals grow as long, parallel fibers, creating its beautiful silky glow.
Gypsum can take on several other appearances, too. Alabaster is a fine-grained, compact form, while desert rose develops when gypsum crystals grow together with sand in shapes that resemble flower petals.
I find it fascinating that satin spar, true selenite, alabaster, and desert rose can look so different, yet all belong to the same mineral family.
Softer Than a Fingernail
Gypsum—including both satin spar and true selenite—has a Mohs hardness of only 2. Your fingernail is harder and can actually scratch either form.
That may be surprising because a thick satin spar tower or bowl can look quite sturdy. In reality, satin spar can easily collect scratches, dents, and chips. Its fine fibers may also split or splinter lengthwise if the piece is dropped or handled roughly.
Satin spar is most often white, colorless, or creamy, but it can also appear in shades of pale yellow, gray, pink, and peach.
We have peach satin spar in our shop. Its warm color comes from naturally occurring iron oxides that stain the gypsum or become included within it as it forms. Depending on the amount of iron present, its color may range from a very soft peach to a deeper orange.
A Name Connected to the Moon
The name selenite comes from Selene, the Greek word for the Moon and the name of the ancient Greek Moon goddess.
When you look at the soft, almost moonlit glow of gypsum, that connection makes sense. Selene was believed to travel across the night sky and was often pictured riding a horse or driving a chariot beneath the crescent Moon.
Although selenite sounds similar to selenium, gypsum does not contain the element selenium. Their names simply share the same Greek connection to the Moon.
I was also surprised to learn that the Romans once used transparent sheets of true selenite in windows. They called it lapis specularis, or “mirror stone.” Because it could be split into thin sheets that allowed light to pass through, it was used before flat glass panes were widely available.
Can you imagine looking outside through a window made from a crystal?
Selenite Crystals Nearly 40 Feet Long
One of the most remarkable examples of true selenite was discovered deep beneath Naica, Mexico, in a place known as the Cave of the Crystals.
When miners entered the chamber in 2000, they found enormous transparent gypsum beams stretching across the cave. Some were nearly 40 feet long, and one was estimated to weigh about 12 tons.
The crystals grew extremely slowly in warm, mineral-rich water, possibly over hundreds of thousands of years. The cave reached temperatures of around 136 degrees with almost 100 percent humidity, making it too dangerous to enter without specialized equipment.
I can hardly imagine standing beside a selenite crystal nearly 40 feet long. Yet those enormous crystal beams and a small satin spar tower share the same chemical composition. They are both gypsum.
Satin Spar in Crystal Traditions
Of course, we can’t talk about satin spar—commonly known as selenite—without also talking a little about the traditions that have developed around it. As I always like to point out, these are traditional metaphysical beliefs and associations, not scientifically established properties. Some people connect deeply with this side of crystals, while others simply love their geology, history, or beauty. There’s room for all of that.
Within crystal traditions, satin spar and true selenite are generally given the same associations because they are both forms of gypsum. Both are most often connected with cleansing, clarity, peace, and spiritual awareness.
Satin spar is the form most commonly made into wands, bowls, and charging plates, so it is usually what people encounter in crystal shops and spiritual practices.
Both forms are most closely associated with the Crown Chakra and sometimes the Third Eye Chakra. Their traditional element is usually Air, although some traditions connect them with Spirit or Ether. Zodiac associations commonly include Taurus and Cancer.
These traditions vary, and you don’t have to follow a particular belief—or belong to a certain Zodiac sign—to appreciate satin spar and selenite.
Caring for Satin Spar
Because satin spar and true selenite are both very soft, they need to be handled gently.
Keep it dry whenever possible. A quick accidental splash will not make it disappear, but soaking or repeated exposure to moisture can dull its surface and gradually damage its fibers.
Use a soft, dry cloth or very soft brush to remove dust. Avoid oils, saltwater, chemical cleaners, and anything abrasive. Store it away from harder stones such as quartz, and be careful with chipped edges because the fibers can become sharp.
Whether you are drawn to its geology, its history, its traditional associations, or simply the way it glows in the light, satin spar has a fascinating story. Learning the difference between satin spar and true selenite doesn’t take away from either one. If anything, I think it gives us even more to appreciate.
